That’s how you get everything from Kodi

Apps & Software

Kodi is now an established name among media fanatics. Logical, because this versatile program is available for all kinds of devices and the playback options seem endless. Yet Kodi is quite a bare affair of his own. Fortunately, you can easily put the software to your hand by importing your media collection. Those who take the trouble to dive deeper into the institutions will experience even more fun with this multimedia all-rounder.

Because of the broad platform support, more and more media lovers know Kodi to find. This way the program works smoothly on Windows and Linux. Ideal for those aspiring to a home-building media player, based on an Intel Nuc, Raspberry Pi or discarded laptop, for example. Some ready-to-use media players also appeal to this program, such as the Eminent EM7680 (via LibreELEC). Kodi has a low-threshold user environment that makes playing movies, series, and music a breeze. However, many users are far from knowing what else you can do with this extensive media client software. How do you get optimal sound and how do you install add-ons from third parties? You can read this and much more in this master class. In this article, we assume that you are using the latest version of Kodi (17.6 Krypton) and have activated the language.

01. Downloading subtitles

Thanks to an extension, it is no longer necessary to manually search for a suitable subtitle file. First surf here and create an account. Do not forget to confirm the registration via e-mail. From the Kodi main menu, go to Add-ons / Download / Subtitles and choose OpenSubtitles.org. Confirm with Install and then go to OpenSubtitles.org again. Via Configuration, you enter the correct log-in details. Now play a film that has no subtitles and chooses lower subtitles for subtitles (speech bubble). Via Download After a short wait, several suitable subtitle files appear. You now assign a subtitle track to add that directly. Do you only see English subtitles? In the main screen, go to Settings (cog wheel) / Player settings / Language and select Languages for download subtitles.

02. Selecting the user environment

Kodi’s home screen shows all recently added titles. For the full range, go to the Movies or Series on the left, and a list will appear. Optionally, you can choose a different view by selecting Options at the bottom left. Select the desired format behind View type, for example, Poster, Fanart or Info wall. You can also throw the entire user interface on the shovel. From the main menu, scroll to Settings / Interface settings. The Estuary skin is standard active. Choose this skin and note that an interface specifically for touch screens is available under the name Estouchy. You can view the rest of the offer via getting More. For example, there are peels that mimic the interface of an Apple TV. Choose an attractive design and try it out (temporarily).

03. Adjusting the refresh rate

Films, series, and TV programs are often recorded at a different refresh rate, for example, 24, 50 or 60 Hz. Fine is when Kodi automatically switches between different refresh rates, so you do not see stuttering images. By far most systems you adjust a setting of Kodi for this. Navigate to Settings / Player settings / Videos. Then choose to Adjust display refresh rate and select the Always option.

04. Surround sound

Have you connected a media player with Kodi via HDMI or s / pdif to a fairly recent receiver? Obviously, you want to take advantage of surround sound. It is important that you transmit a “rough” sound signal to the receiver so that this device can decode the surround format. You dive into the sound settings for this. From the main menu, go to Settings / System Settings / Sound.

Choose Default and Advanced in the lower left corner so that the expert settings appear. You check at the top of Device for sound output or the name of the receiver is listed. See if the number of channels is correct and scroll down a bit. Enable the Allow transit function. Next, you indicate which surround formats the receiver can process independently, such as Dolby Digital, TrueHD, DTS, and DTS-HD. Does your receiver only accept Dolby digital soundtracks, for example via an opticals / pdif connection? Then switch on the Activate Dolby Digital (AC3) transcoding option. For example, movies with DTS sound converts Kodi live to Dolby digital, so you enjoy surround sound as well.

Kodi back up
If your media player crashes unexpectedly, a reinstallation of Kodi may be necessary. Annoying, especially because you have to go through all settings again. For this reason, you should keep a backup of all the options you have chosen yourself. Go to Add-ons / Download / Program add-ons and install the Backup extension. Via Configure and External folder you assign the desired location. For File Selection, determine which data you want to save a copy, such as add-ons, profiles, and configuration files. Through Scheduling, you decide how often you want to make backups.

05. Profiles

In households with several people, it makes sense to arrange several profiles in Kodi. Each family member thus has his own media catalog. Scroll to Settings / Profile settings / Add profile and enter a name. Next, you indicate in which folder you want to save the profile information. You can use the default location for this. Optionally add a profile image. Furthermore, the options Media-Info and Media locations are interesting. This determines the extent to which you want to share media files with other family members. Make a selection and confirm with OK. Indicate whether you want to take over the settings from the main account. After you confirm with OK again, you choose General. Determine whether Kodi should display a login screen from now on.

06. Add package source

Kodi already contains an extensive catalog with add-ons. You can install this directly in the program. In addition, there are many expansions on the web that are often developed by hobbyists. Remember that Kodi usually does not check add-ons of third parties. For example, it involves illegal extensions that allow you to stream new films and live sports contests. You must first give permission for the installation of such extensions. Navigate to Settings / System settings / Add-ons and activate the switch behind Unknown sources. Confirm with Yes. Various package sources (or repositories) are available on the internet in which all kinds of add-ons are locked up.

SuperRepo has been known for years as the world’s most famous package for Kodi, but for some time the official website has been offline. Nevertheless, many add-ons from this package source work fine. In this masterclass, we explain the installation of SuperRepo, although you can also look for other sources (at your own risk). From the main menu go to Settings / File manager and choose to Add location. Select None, and then type the web address srp.nu. Confirm with OK and give this location as a link to SuperRepo. You choose OK twice and returns to the main menu again. In the Add-ons category, select the icon with the unfolded box at the top left. Using Add-ons using zip file a new dialog will appear. Now browse to SuperRepo / krypton / all and install the zip file.

07. Alternative add-ons

Once you have added a package source to Kodi, add add-ons at your own risk if you wish. In the home screen, open the Add-ons category and choose the box at the top left for the unfolded box. Via Install from the repository you assign the desired package source, for example, SuperRepo All. The extensions are divided over various sections, such as Video add-ons, PVR clients and Services. The add-on depot heading gives you access to countless package resources that you can add to Kodi. Once you’ve found a nice extension, add it directly to the media program. Depending on which add-on you install, you will usually find the part somewhere in the Kodi menu. For example, video services usually end up in the Videos / Video add-ons category. Please note that not all extensions work equally well.

Watching television
Besides all kinds of obscure add-ons, you can also receive real live television in Kodi. The condition is that a TV tuner is present, for example, a DVB-T receiver on a PC. To decode commercial channels, a smart card is required for digital television in the Netherlands. Certain NPO channels and regional channels are directly accessible. For receipt on a computer, you use specific software, for example, NextPVR. By loading the corresponding add-on (PVR client) in Kodi, you will now receive live television in Kodi.

08. Trakt.tv

Those who watch a lot of series and films may no longer know what has already been viewed in the long run. In that case, offers an account with Trakt.tv outcome. This service accurately keeps track of which films you have seen and at which episode of a series you stayed. You also know exactly when new broadcasts are planned. Trakt.tv also comes up with recommendations based on your viewing behavior. From the Kodi add-on library, you can install an extension that registers your viewing behavior. Movies and series that you watch with Kodi from now on automatically passes the program to your Trakt account (scrobbling). Conveniently, this Trakt.tv works alongside Kodi with programs/services such as Netflix, Plex, VLC and Media Portal, so that you can record your viewing behavior on multiple platforms. In Kodi, you go to Add-ons / Download / Program add-ons, after which you choose Trakt Install.

09. Configure Trakt.tv

The Trakt extension only works when your Trakt account is linked to this add-on. After the installation, a pop-up screen with a unique code automatically appears. Surf here and enter the code there. Confirm with CONTINUE / YES. A message appears in Kodi that the add-on is now linked to your account. In the list of installed add-ons go to Trakt / Configure. Under Scrobble you indicate which view data you want to pass on to Trakt.tv. Would you like to be notified when Kodi passes information to your Trakt.tv account? Then turn on the switch behind Show message at scrobble. Then navigate to Synchronize and activate the option Synchronize your collection while updating or cleaning your library. Review the remaining options at your own discretion and save the changes with OK. You check on trakt.tv if Kodi passes film and serial data correctly.

10. Favorites

Because of the wide availability of add-ons you make Kodi as extensive as you want. Conveniently, you add frequently used extensions to your favorites, as well as movies, series, and music. So you do not have to navigate through the media program each time, for example, to open a video file or streaming movie service. Keep in mind that you cannot mark anything as a favorite from the Home screen. Browse to the desired title or installed add-on and open the context menu, for example with the right mouse button. Choose to Add to favorites. Also, take a look at the other options. For example, you request extra movie information via the context menu and mark your media files as viewed. Finally, you can also create playlists.

11. Remote control app

Kodi has been developed to be used with a remote control. Do not you have that? Then use a mobile app! In Kodi, first, go to Settings / Service settings / Management. Enable the Allow remote access via HTTP and Allow remote control via applications on other systems. Also, remember a username and password. For Android devices, use the Kore app, while using an iPhone or iPad to call on Official Kodi Remote. Enter all fields in the app to connect, such as the IP address of the system that Kodi runs on and login data.
