Oppo Find X

In a market that is struggling to present something really new and futuristic. Oppo displaces everyone with its Oppo Find X. It is characterized by a really full-screen design, with frames reduced to the minimum terms but without a notch. To do this it uses a retractable mechanism for cameras, fairly durable and well-functioning. If on the hardware level there are no uncertainties. However, there are many on that software.

Warranty Summary
  • Brand Warranty of 1 Year Available for Mobile and 6 Months for Accessories Including Battery

This year we have seen all the shapes and sizes: there are those who proposed it to drop. Those long and those who boasted of its compactness, and others have instead presented an elegant solution to a dot. We are talking of course of the notch, this small notch that contains all the front-facing sensors necessary for the proper functioning of the Smartphone. The space to enclose them has been decreasing more and more. The producers who have been forced to find a solution to insert the telephone capsule, the front camera, ambient light sensors, and proximity, and all the other sensors that – by force – must be integrated in front. And while the other producers clashed by proposing the most disparate solutions came Oppo. Just officially arrived on the Italian market with regard to smartphones, with a brilliant solution.

Apparently, Oppo Find X, which we will discuss in this review, has no notch and does not even have a phone capsule, or the front camera. In fact, if you look back you do not even have the back one. All this because all the sensors to which we referred before being inserted in a small compartment that comes out from the rest of the body only if necessary with a mechanism that can withstand, given the hand. Over 300 thousand openings (equivalent to 10 years of use normal): accessing the photo app, or during authentication or unlocking via face recognition, comes out a module hidden from the front display and rear body of the rear terminal. Which contains everything you need, the various sensors, and even the cameras, which at the rear are two.

The notch does not like, cannot please. It is a compromise that underlines the technological insufficiency of the current period. It offers no advantage, if not some disadvantage, and the Oppo solution is both elegant and functional. Of course, even the design of the Chinese manufacturer brings with it some compromise. We cannot hide it: for example, Oppo Find X has proved less robust of other devices of the same market band and of the same generation. Some doubt there is also with regard to the real duration of the mechanism. During our tests, we also verified a certain discomfort in using the Smartphone horizontally with the photographic module open, and it happened – even if sporadically – to find us with small flaps of skin stuck inside the mechanism at the closing. Of course, the Smartphone is not waterproof.

Oppo claims that thanks to the notch-free solution, the new Oppo Find X has a screen-frame ratio of around 93.8%. Seen from the front the display occupies a large portion of the surface, with three sides that boast a small frame of similar size. In the upper one, we also find the phone capsule grid, but the real capsule is in the camera module and remains hidden (but working) during calls. On the lower side the frame is slightly wider, but still extremely acceptable. The first impact with the display on and AMOLED of excellent quality is undoubtedly important, thanks to the bright colors of the backgrounds that we find natively on the device.

But let’s move on to the numbers: Oppo Find X uses a 6.42 “display at full HD + resolution (2340×1080 pixels) with a ratio between the sides of 19.5: 9. Under the body, there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, that now we know more than good, combined with a compartment of 8 GB for RAM, and 128 or 256 GB for storage. While the integrated battery is 3.730 mAh. As for the cameras, we find a double module at the rear with sensor 16 MP main and stabilized OIS lens with f / 2.0 apertures, combined with a 20 MP secondary camera. While on the front there is a 25 MP camera with f / 2.0 lenses.

On the connectivity front, we have support for 4G LTE Gigabit networks, Cat. 16 for download, Wi-Fi ac dual-band, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and as a unique unlocking method, facial authentication with the scenographic output of the module each time the display is switched on. For the 3.730 mAh battery, fast with Super VOOC technology, there is a USB Type-C connector, while the 3.5 mm audio connector is missing. In the official equipment we still find the adapter and a pair of headphones with the digital connector, and also housing (without the top part, not to prevent the operation of the mechanism for retractable cameras. There is everything, in short, along with a huge power supply for quick charging.

Looking at the Smartphone on the back you understand that nothing is left to chance: the effect of the glass finish makes it a unique and easily distinguishable Smartphone, with the word Oppo that remains in prominence thanks to its silver color. Also, the perceived constructive quality is very high, with the upper module that, when not recalled, seems to be part of the main structure of the device. In short, Oppo Find X is introduced with arrogance within the Olympus of high-end smartphones, but this does not mean that it lacks flaws (we’ll see them later). And do not believe that Oppo is a disgrace in the Smartphone industry: do not forget, in fact, that in China is among the market leaders, often stealing the first position to brands such as Apple, Huawei, Vivo, and Xiaomi.

Oppo Find X

  • Fantastically sleek, no-bezel design
  • Plenty of power
  • Novel pop-up concept

  • No waterproofing
  •  NFC no, microSD, or headphone jack
  • No fingerprint scanner
  • Mechanism feels like it won’t last

Software and user experience

We were talking about faults, and the software is one of those. Not so much because it is hurt or has technical deficiencies of a certain level, but because it is too much inspired by Apple’s iOS, an approach that we cannot of course support. Color OS is a reference point for Oppo terminals, just as the MIUI is for Xiaomi, and is characterized by vivid and vivid colors, with full support for widgets and advanced features typical of Android. Try to combine the best of both worlds, but the inexperience of Oppo in our market can be seen in some details, inspired by Asian tastes. The launcher is quite stringent in terms of functionality (but you can change) and offers all the apps installed in Home: supports folders and at the right end offers an entire screen where the.

The Notification Center, when called, occupies the entire screen and the management of incoming notifications seemed a bit ‘cumbersome. In fact, to eliminate individual entries, a single swipe is not enough, but to this, we must add the pressure of the appropriate button that appears. Settings are well-ordered, with some that resemble other competitors’ Smartphones. For example, the curved edges of the device’s display light up with spectacular lighting when the notifications arrive. While the “notification bar and status” can be customized adding the battery percentage and the speed of the network in real-time. Oppo also gives the possibility to set the color temperature of the screen,

Oppo Find X also gives you the possibility to surf the Smartphone with different gestures to be performed on the edges of the display. Which however have seemed too complex to perform. The possibility to “clone” the installed apps is very interesting; in order to use different instances for each integrated SIM. Color OS is definitely well optimized for performance, and the 8 GB of RAM allows the user to forget any type of background app without even noticing it: Oppo Find X has proved to be a very pleasant Smartphone to use in all circumstances, fluid and reactive, and even while charging, it tends to heat up in a worrying way: if you use it becomes little more than warm, like any device that uses any type of fast-charge technology.

Performance, display, autonomy: technical analysis

As for the purely technical analysis, we start from the performance, with Oppo Find X that uses the queen platform that has marked this generation of Android smartphones: Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. In this case, the SoC is combined with a sumptuous memories compartment in terms of RAM, 8 GB, while on the storage side we find 128 or 256 GB not expandable via microSD. This is a limitation, unquestionably, but made less restrictive by the ample availability of storage space even for the entry-level version. Recall that the Qualcomm top-of-the-range SoC uses octa-core architecture with four Kryo 385 cores at the full operating frequency, equal to 2.7GHz, and the same architecture with a reduced operating frequency of 1.7GHz.

As for the performance we have nothing to clarify: Oppo Find X behaves very well with all types of tasks, always proving extremely reactive and fluid in all circumstances. If from the purely aesthetic and functional point of view ColorOS we did not like it much, as far as optimization is concerned. We have nothing to complain about.

Certainly very interesting also the display, which is not defined as other tops of the range of competition, but for those who do not have a hawk’s view can be more than good. The resolution is derived from Full HD, with a pixel count of 2340×1080 pixels spread on a diagonal of 6.42 “with a perspective ratio of 19.5: 9. The pixel density is about 401PPI, good but not excellent. a peculiar feature, of course, is the total absence of notch, with Oppo Find X which offers a screen-frame ratio that really touches 90%, and not only on the license plate data released by the company. The feature is offered in combination with slightly rounded edges, with the frontal design of Oppo Find X which is without a doubt the most futuristic (and beautiful) of this generation.

Oppo makes it even more appealing with the “Panoramic light effect curve” (the translation of some menu items is not among the best). This allows you to replace the canon LED for notifications (which is not there) with an effect of customizable multi-color light that “touches” and follows the edges.

Regarding the technical measurements, Oppo Find X offers excellent coverage of the DCI-P3 color space, with a certain tendency towards colder colors of the color spectrum. Even the white point tends slightly to the blue, for a quality of the image that is however tangentially very good even if with a slight over-saturation as regards the green colors. Even the viewing angles are particularly wide, as typical for an AMOLED. While the maximum brightness is not very high. With 400cd / m² measured in our test. However, we can guarantee that the display of Oppo Find X “reads” easily even under the sunlight.

Oppo Find X does not disappoint even with regard to operational autonomy. Thanks to the amperage of the battery that is quite substantial: 3730 mAh. With our Wi-Fi navigation test, he behaved in the middle of the category. Touching the 12 hours of the screen before switching off in an inexorable way. This data can be translated into standard battery life for this generation: the whole day is practically almost assured, and with moderate use, you can hope to do the two days, or a day and a half of normal use.

There is not much innovation with regard to the photographic sector, with a rather strange choice regarding the rear module. It is a double camera made up of two sensors that are all too similar: the main one is a 16MP Sony IMX519, with 1.22μm pixels and optically stabilized lens with fixed aperture f / 2.0; the secondary, however, is a 20 MP, but it is RGB and has a lens with the same focal length as the first. Considering that the sensor dimensions are smaller and that the resolution is higher (20 MP), one can guess that the second module cannot give any contribution either with a possible zoom or with the improvement of the shots in poor light conditions. The second module in other words,

It’s ugly the graphics interface of the photo app, borrowed once again from iOS, but which guarantees a good degree of customization both with different simplified settings and through the “Expert” mode that allows you to set white balance, exposure, ISO, shutter speed and manual focus. As for the front camera instead, we have a module of 25 MP with an aperture of f / 2.0, with fixed focus and with support for the 3-HDR technology. There is also the possibility to scan a 3D model of the user’s face, which can also be modified later. It is a sort of “digital” plastic surgery, but it can also be used to correct some imperfections caused by scanning errors.

The Oppo Find X camera manages to capture a huge amount of detail, and from this point of view can be considered among the best of this generation, along with cornerstones like Galaxy S9 and iPhone X, to name some of the most nominated. It does not reach the level of refinement of the Huawei P20 Pro and sometimes tends to overexpose the brighter details. But in principle, it is able to offer excellent reliability in all conditions. Very good the amount of detail captured even in situations of very low brightness (for example the texture of the petals in the picture in the dark is well done). Oppo uses in a thoughtful way the “sharpness” effect in the photos. Where other companies exaggerate in a conspicuous way.

The photographic section of Oppo Find X is promoted with flying colors in the photo of the warehouse. In intermediate conditions and low light, the smartphone is in the top positions of the entire category. Where it sins, however, is in the zoom and flash management. Optical zoom is missing and activating the flash there is a certain tendency to overexpose. The second problem can be solved by manually setting the shooting options.

Final considerations

Oppo Find X is the only Smartphone that moves away from the crowd. Which dares a little ‘more and amazes. On the hardware level. It is a true demonstration of style thanks to the excellent AMOLED display with curved sides that almost completely occupies the front surface, without the notch and without other tricks. Actually, there is a trick but this time you do not see.

The cameras, the telephone capsule, and all the front-facing sensors are located in a retractable compartment. Which comes out (and very quickly) only when needed. The performance is at the top, and the memory compartment is the first of the class: 8 GB RAM and 128 or 256 GB storage. Difficult to fill them even the camera surprised us: needless to go too far. But that of Oppo Find X is one of the best you can find on a Smartphone.

Perfection, however, does not exist and Oppo Find X is not without problems: ColorOS, for example, is ugly and does not meet the tastes of Western users in our opinion. Overly colored, too similar to iOS and with translations too far approximate for a smartphone of this caliber. If for all the other ways Find X can support terminals such as Galaxy S9. Huawei P20 Pro and iPhone XS, there is still a huge amount of work to be done on the software. The futuristic retractable system for the camera also makes the device less resistant (there are several specific online tests that went very badly). It is reasonable to think that it is the reason for the lack of IP certification. The audio jack is missing, but this is a venial problem now.
