Huawei P30

The new smartphones from the Huawei P range put all their attention on the new Superspectrum camera. The three rear cameras and the finger scanner embedded in the screen make the Huawei P30 a step ahead of the P20.

On paper, the new triple rear camera Huawei P30 seems one of the best in the industry at the moment and especially a great improvement over the model of last year the P20. Which already had good cameras.

The P30 has an attractive design, with a large screen (and a small notch) and very colorful finishes. The internal components are also up to the mark and make it a difficult rival to beat in the flagship sector.

Review of the Huawei P30:

Leaving aside the political controversies of Huawei in the West, there is no doubt that the Chinese company continues to manufacture some of the best smartphones in the world. This is demonstrated by its new flagships: the P30 and the P30 Pro.

Normally, the main difference between the standard model and the Pro or Plus model is the size of its screen and the possible presence of one more camera, but in this case, there is much more than differentiates the P30 from the P30 Pro.

In this way, there are many others to keep in mind if you do not know which model to choose between these two. We help you decide if you should buy the P30 in this review. Keep in mind that our opinion, for now, is based only on the first contact.

Huawei P30 Pro

  • Fantastic camera
  • Vibrant design
  • Powerful processor

  • No wireless charging
  • Huawei’s UI not to everyone’s taste
  • Not as good as the P30 Pro

It is hard to assess the quality of the P30. As we have been able to test it for a short time, and it remains to be seen how its cameras really respond. On paper, yes, its triple rear camera is a great improvement over previous models.

In addition, it could also be one of the best configurations in the current market. We like the small changes that Huawei has made in its design. The colors it is available in and that its screen has the same dimensions as the P20 Pro.

Price and availability

Huawei has presented the new family of smartphones of the P range: the P30 and the P30 Pro. We already know the price of the P30: $ 799.

Nice photos

As often happens with the Huawei P-range, the main attraction of the new P30 is its cameras. It is true that the Huawei P30 does not have the quadruple rear camera of the Huawei P30 Pro but still manages to be up to the task.

If we take a look at the technical specifications, the P30 is undoubtedly a step ahead of the already impressive P20. It has a color lens and another monochrome lens in the back.

Huawei P30

That’s not so in the new P30, which has a total of three rear cameras: 16 MP (ultra-wide-angle, f / 2.2) + 40 MP (Superspectrum, f / 1.8) + 8 MP (telephoto, f / 2.4, OIS). It does not have the TOF lens of the P30 Pro but it does have a 32 MP front camera.

Highlights the new lens Superspectrum, which instead of including an RGB sensor (red, green and blue), has a sensor that Huawei has called RYYB. It is able to capture yellow light instead of green. Which according to the company absorbs both green light and additional red light.

Maybe all this sounds too technical. What it means, at least according to Huawei, is that the camera can capture more light. This gives more information to the image processor with which to work and it improves the photos taken in low light environments.

For now, we have not been able to see first hand that all this is true. But we will update our review once we have the opportunity to analyze the Huawei P30 cameras more thoroughly.

What does seem unquestionable is that cameras are the main difference between the standard model and the P30 Pro? Which has optical stabilization and an aperture of f / 1.6 in the main lens, as well as optical zoom of x5 in the ultra-large angular?

Nice screen

It should not be surprising that the P30 presents some design changes, but to be honest. It is not a complete renewal of the previous model’s aspect, but rather an evolution of the P20.

In the front, the start button has disappeared, now replaced by a finger scanner embedded in the screen. The notch is smaller, since the traditional loudspeaker. Which does not use the vibration system of the P30 Pro is located right on the edge of the screen.

Huawei P30

If we turn it around, we find the triple rear camera. It is a smartphone with a rather slender design, but the truth is that the rear lenses bulge considerably and you will need a case to protect them from possible scratches.

Now, we recommend that this case be transparent like the one included in the box- since you will want to show off the attractive finish of the rear glass. It is available in five different colors, but the iridescent Breathing Crystal and Amber Sunrise stand out.

The lower part of the phone includes the second speaker. The USB C port and the 3.5 mm jack a feature that we do not find in the Pro. This is where the change in design is also noticeable.  P30 is now much flatter and more rectangular than before.

As for the dimensions of the screen, it is a 6.1-inch OLED panel like the P20 Pro, with a resolution of 2340 x 1080  the same as in the P30 Pro. The bevels are thin but it does not have a curved edge like in the Pro model.

Apart from all this, it has IP53 protection, so it is limited to limited protection against dust and resistance to splashes. Your 3560 mAh battery should last all day, but it is not compatible with wireless charging.

If you look at its internal specifications, the P30 comes with the 980 processor, the same as found in the Mate 20. It should be enough, especially since it comes with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of minimum storage.
