If you use Facebook Messenger you want to know what are the best tips and tricks so you can get the most out of the Facebook Messenger app.

1. Activate dark mode

Facebook Messenger now has its own ‘dark mode’. Which you can activate by opening any conversation and sending the emoji from the half moon. You will be asked to access the ‘Settings’ menu, where you will see the option to activate the dark mode.

2. Stop showing when you are online

As you surely know, Facebook Messenger indicates when you’re online even when you’re not. Obviously, this only means that you are reachable, but it can lead to quite uncomfortable misunderstandings.

You can stop this behavior by starting Messenger, touching the icon of your profile in the upper right corner and selecting ‘Active status’. If you do not want to appear online, slide the switch next to ‘Show when you are active’.

3. Deactivate ‘Chat Bubbles’

When you receive a Facebook message, the profile image of your contact appears in a circle on the screen and stays there until you discard it, even if you have responded to the message.

This can be particularly irritating when you are watching a video or playing a game with your mobile, however, it is possible to disable chat bubbles if you wish.

Start Facebook Messenger, tap on the icon of your profile, and then scroll down to and tap on the ‘Bubbles of chat’ option. You will see that there is a switch that you can swipe to activate or deactivate the option, as you wish.

4. Use Facebook Messenger for text messages

With multiple messaging applications on your phone, keeping track of all your conversations can be tricky, but Facebook Messenger allows you to see both SMS and Messenger messages in one place.

Start the application, tap on the icon of your profile, scroll down and select SMS, then slide the switch next to ‘Deactivated’. SMS conversations will only be visible in the application, not on your PC.

5. Make group video calls

To make a group video call, just open a group conversation and touch the phone icon at the top of the screen; that easy.

You can also view a record of your previous phone calls by opening the ‘Phone’ tab on the Messenger home screen.

6. Send payments

It is possible to send money to your friends on Facebook Messenger. It works in a very similar way to PayPal, but it is not PayPal, so the first time you use it you will have to configure the payment details by tapping the icon of your profile, scrolling down and selecting payments.

Before you can send money, you must enter a PIN code or use your fingerprint, and the recipient will have a limited time to accept payment. If the time runs out, the funds will be returned to your bank account.

7. Add contacts quickly in Messenger

Facebook Messenger supports a QR code feature that allows you to quickly find new accounts or share your own. Launch the application, tap its profile icon, and then select your profile image at the top of the screen.

There are two tabs here: The scan code allows you to scan another person’s account code; my code allows you to share your own. You can also use the Share icon located at the top right to send that code through WhatsApp, Gmail or other applications.

8. Mute chat notifications

If someone or a group of people bombards you with messages it’s easy to silence chat notifications.

Open the private conversation or group conversation, touch the information icon on the top right, scroll down and choose the ‘Notifications’ option. A new window will open and at the top, you will see the option ‘Mute conversation’.

You can choose the time you want that person or group to be silenced, from 15 minutes to 24 hours or ‘until you activate them again’.

9. Share your location

It’s easy to share your location with any of your friends for up to an hour. This can be useful especially if you’ve stayed with someone and do not know exactly where. Touch the four-point icon next to the text field in any conversation, then select ‘Location’ and ‘Share your location’.

To stop sharing your location at any time, simply go back to the message and touch Stop sharing.

10. Send Snapchat style photos

Facebook Messenger allows you to create and send Snapchat-style photos to your friends. To use this function, open a conversation and touch the camera icon.

You’ll see several filters similar to Snapchat’s at the bottom of the screen, but a key difference with Snapchat is that you do not need to press the face first to activate them. You can also touch the icon of the art palette in the upper right to add scribbles, text and emoji.

Now experiment to compose your photo. Touch the circular button at the bottom of the screen to take a photo or long press to watch a video.

11. Post an stories with Facebook Messenger

Facebook has followed the same path as Instagram and WhatsApp (both owned by the social network) and has added a Snapchat Stories clone to Messenger, allowing you to share snapshots with your friends that are deleted after 24 hours.

To create a story, start the application and select the large ‘+’ icon on top of ‘Your Story’, or touch the camera icon at the top right.

Your story, along with that of your friends, will be displayed at the top of the Messenger application.

12. Disables Facebook Messenger to save photos automatically

Gone are the days when the storage of tiny devices was a major problem, but those with cheap phones or those who like to take many photos may still have problems.

Or maybe you just do not want every selfie you send through Messenger saved in the photo gallery of your phone.

To disable the Messenger tool to save photos and other captured media within the application on your phone, start the application, touch the icon of your profile, then scroll down and select ‘Photos and Media’. Make sure ‘Save on capture’ is off.

13. Choose the size of your ‘Like’

Facebook introduced the ability to send your friends thumbs up in the chat a long time ago, ideal for someone to know that you have seen a message or to show your enthusiasm for a particular topic.

However, not many people know that you can change the size of the ‘like’ icon. You just have to press and hold the thumbs button up to see the increase in logo size.

14. Send balloons

If someone you know is celebrating a birthday or other event. You can now send a message to see how the balloons fly across the screen.

To do this, simply open the chat conversation with your friend in particular and send him an emoji balloon. When they open the message, the balloons will be released.

15. Send gifs with Facebook Messenger

GIFs are increasingly popular in any of the social networks. Therefore, it was expected that Facebook would also have the possibility to send GIFs.

You just have to touch the emoji icon in the text field of any conversation and select the GIF field. You can use the search bar to find specific GIFs.
