Shadow of the Colossus, the second title of Team Ico, came out for the PlayStation 2 eleven years ago. Since then, this classic has been lonely, because no one has made a similar game. To introduce a new generation to it, Sony has ordered a remake at Bluepoint Games.
- Original is intact
- Looks amazing
- Smoother than original
- Photo mode
- Control and camera continue to tease
Shadow of the Colossus (2018)

- Price: € 39.99
- Genre: Action-adventure
- Platform: PlayStation 4
We were a bit worried about this remake. The original Shadow of the Colossus is a work of art and that should not change too much. What would a complete remake do with our memories? It did not take long for the startup to all our worries when snow disappeared. This is Shadow of the Colossus as we know it, while we can also experience the game in a whole new way with graphics that fit in 2018.
David and Goliath
In Shadow of the Colossus, you are a warrior who wants his deceased lover back. For this, he travels to a deserted country to ask for help from higher powers. They give him a clear assignment: defeat the sixteen creatures in this country and we return her soul. Simple right On seeing your first target, however, courage quickly falls into your shoes: these creatures are gigantic. You as a small person standing opposite a colossus as high as a flat, with a weapon the size of a bus. This dark creature looks at you with its shiny eyes, while you are trembling on your knees and only have a little bow and a sword with you.
Fortunately, it is not just a sword. If you hold this weapon up, a blue light not only points to your next target but also to weak points on the bodies of the colossi. Your goal is to reach these points. Every colossus is, therefore, a puzzle in which you figure out how to climb the beast and, without falling off, put your sword in those weak points.
More beautiful and more difficult
The remake puts these sixteen magical creatures more violently than ever on your screen. On the PlayStation 2 they were already impressive, but now they are simply beautiful. That only makes it harder to put a sword in their head. They have not done anything wrong to you, but you still go to your faithful horse without thinking to find and kill the next creature. Everything has to give way to get your loved one back.
Climbing over the hairy surfaces of the animals, it is striking how soft and luxuriant the fur has become. As you hold on tightly and progress little by little, one of the best game soundtracks ever swells. Then it does not matter anymore whether you have played this game before. You will experience it again as new.
Besides the colossi, the whole world is a joy to watch. The sun is more powerful, the fog more atmospheric and the water more realistic. The world is still an empty and, above all, lonely place, but driving through it while the camera occupies a cinematic position is nothing short of insane.
One of the great forces of Shadow of the Colossus is its simplicity. The game offers a world where it only concerns you and those colossi. You do not have to collect anything, defeat little creatures and not upgrade yourself. As a result, the game barely fits into the gaming landscape of 2018 but shows how strong such a focus can be.
The steering is slightly adjusted. Some buttons have changed and the main character moves slightly more smoothly. The adjustments are subtle but nice. However, the steering remains recognizable and there is also some clumsiness. For example, the camera may still cause problems during the action.
There is also an easy mode added, but the coolest extra is the photo mode. At any time in the game, you press the photo button to make a snapshot. The post-processing options have been remarkably extended. You can lay the camera around, choose filters, adjust the color balance, change the depth and sharpness, and so on. If you like to play with this you will be twice as long with the game, because you always see a nice angle for a photo.
This is how a remake should be. The original remains intact, but with beautiful graphics, a slightly adjusted control and some nice extras that do not change anything. Fans of the original can, therefore, take a breath because the remake is made with all due respect and love for the eleven-year-old game. That the control and the camera are not completely perfect also belongs a bit. For others, this is the perfect opportunity to experience this classic for the first time.
This remake also proves that Shadow of the Colossus is rightly called a classic. The game remains firmly in 2018 with just a few small adjustments. In our original review, we wrote the terrible conclusion eleven years ago: “It is an experience that you have to experience”. We are still just behind that.
Shadow of the Colossus is on sale from February 6 for PlayStation 4.
