3 handy add-ons for Firefox

Apps & Software

add-onsAlthough Firefox is out of the box as an excellent browser, there are of course still things that make it just a bit nicer. This can be done via add-ons, small programs that run in your browser. These are 3 super handy add-ons for Firefox.

First, the bad news Mozilla has introduced a totally new system for add-ons with the arrival of version 57, also known as Quantum. It means that the support for add-ons ‘old style’ has been canceled. Fortunately, programmers are working hard on converting their add-ons. So if you are a bit lucky, your favorite copy is now available for Quantum. And otherwise, it might be time to stalk the programmer. As far as we are concerned, we use a few add-ons that are certainly worthwhile. And have also made the switch to the new Firefox.

To install

You can search and install add-ons by clicking on the button at the top right, with the three dashes. In the drop-down menu, click Add-ons and then (left) on their add-ons. Now you see a handful of suggestions, scroll all the way down and click on the button View more add-ons for a total overview. You can search for specific extensions via the search field at the top right of the page. Or browse through the offer. Did you find something, click Add to Firefox and done. Disabling or removing an add-on can be done again via the Add-on administrator; available add-ons can be found under Extensions.

ColorfulTabs has been running for a very long time. It is an add-on that ensures that each tab gets its own color. Sounds simplistic, but turns out to be very useful in practice if you regularly have a lot of tabs open. Finding a tab is suddenly a lot easier! In the latest Firefox, the add-on not only adjusts the color of the tabs, but also that of the top toolbar. Whether that is a benefit or disadvantage is left in the middle. Matter of personal taste, In any case, it leaves nothing to be desired at all. However, the creator of the tool still has to tinker with the functionality in Quantum, because non-active tabs are still colorless. And that was precisely the strength of ColorfulTabs. But we’re guessing that that will eventually turn out well.

Adblocker Ultimate

Although it remains a controversial subject on the ‘publishing side’, adblockers are a blessing for users. Not only do they provide delicious, quiet, advertising-free web pages, they also ensure a lot less data traffic. That is nice for mobile use. And last but not least, they offer just an extra piece of security. Malicious advertisements can inject malicious code, for example. The annoying thing is that malicious advertisements do not necessarily have to be placed by a provider of a page, often advertisements automatically appear as part of a closed deal with a provider of them. Anyway, an adblocker has its advantages. Very pleasant to use, for example, is AdBlocker Ultimate. Note that many websites can only exist through advertising revenue. So consider putting your favorites on the whitelist.

Print Edit WE

Printing web pages sometimes result in chaotic results. With a lot of wasted paper packed with unwanted comments on an article or almost white pages at the beginning. With Print Edit you do that stuff through an extensive preview mode in which you can, for example, remove elements that you do not want to see on paper. By clicking on the Web Style button you often keep the page layout as it appears on your screen. Website programmers do not always provide a (correct) printable layout with a lot of paper-making as a result. Last but not least, it is also possible to create PDF files – with or without preservation of the original layout Ideal for creating an archive.
